MedTech Flanders becomes part of MEDVIA, Flanders’ healthtech spearhead cluster
MEDVIA was founded in 2021 as Flanders’ spearhead cluster focused on health technologies. It is an industry-driven, public-private partnership that initiates and supports innovation in biotechnology, medtech and digital medicine through direct funding and specialized services, in co-operation with the Flemish department of Innovation & Entrepreneurship (VLAIO). In a special meeting of the General Assembly, MedTech Flanders decided to transfer its activities to MEDVIA.
Since 2015, MedTech Flanders has served as an umbrella organization for companies working in medical technology in Flanders. It was founded by a consortium of medtech stakeholders to represent the interests of companies involved in innovative medical technologies. MedTech Flanders has seen a sharp increase in membership since then and was one of the organizations involved in the foundation of flanders.healthtech, now known as MEDVIA.
MEDVIA previously incorporated the services of digital medicine umbrella organization DSP Valley, welcoming its members into MEDVIA. It is now doing the same for the medtech sector, fulfilling the request of VLAIO to consolidate the healthtech sector in the spearhead cluster MEDVIA.
Karin Scheerlinck, chair of the board of MedTech Flanders: “We are very satisfied and proud of the work that MedTech Flanders has done to give the medtech sector in Flanders a voice and put them on the agenda in the Flemish government. By unifying with MEDVIA, our activities will be better supported with more resources, and the interests of medtech companies will be strongly represented in the spearhead cluster.”
Ann Van Gysel, CEO MEDVIA: “Companies active in health technologies are facing many challenges. We will actively represent these members and work to provide them with all of the services available our organization. This means access to international markets and to financing. MEDVIA also offers them a forum to create partnerships with patients and hospitals and to connect with our other members from the biotech, biopharma and digital medicine sectors.”
Mark Andries, administrator-general of VLAIO emphasizes the crucial role filled by MEDVIA: ‘As one of Flanders’ seven spearhead clusters, Medvia is a key player in the region’s innovation landscape. It consolidates the innovation capacities of the healthcare sector, helping to strengten the Flemish economy. It is crucial that sectors strengthen their ties and share their expertise and know-how in order to establish and improve cross-fertilization within their disciplines. The incorpation of MedTech Flanders is thus an important step forward.’

MedTech Flanders wordt deel van Medvia, speerpuntcluster gezondheidstechnologie
MEDVIA, de recent opgericht speerpuntcluster voor gezondheidstechnologie, is een industrie-gedreven privaat-publieke-partnership met de Vlaamse overheid dat innovatie in biotech, biopharma, medtech en digitale gezondheidszorg ondersteunt via gespecialiseerde diensten en subsidies, in samenwerking met VLAIO. MedTech Flanders heeft via een bijzondere Algemene Vergadering beslist om haar activiteiten over te dragen aan MEDVIA en zichzelf op te heffen.
MedTech Flanders, de netwerkorganisatie van de medische technologiebedrijven in Vlaanderen, werd in 2015 opgericht door een consortium MedTech stakeholders bij gebrek aan een klankbord voor de innovatieve Vlaamse bedrijven actief in medische technologie.
MedTech Flanders heeft zijn ledenaantal sindsdien zien uitbreiden en stond mee aan de wieg van het innovatieve bedrijvennetwerk flanders.healthtech en later de speerpuntcluster Medvia.
MEDVIA verwelkomde reeds de digitale bedrijven via DSP Valley Health en nu dus ook de medische technologie bedrijven en geeft zo gevolg aan de oproep van VLAIO om het clusterlandschap te vereenvoudigen en te consolideren in de speerpuntcluster MEDVIA.
Karin Scheerlinck, voorzitter van de Raad van bestuur van MedTech Flanders geeft meer duiding: ‘We zijn heel tevreden en fier dat we dankzij MedTech Flanders, de MedTech bedrijven een stem hebben gegeven in Vlaanderen en MedTech op de agenda hebben geplaatst van de Vlaamse overheid. Dankzij de aansluiting bij Medvia zullen onze activiteiten met meer middelen ondersteund kunnen worden en zullen de belangen van MedTech bedrijven sterk vertegenwoordigd zijn in de speerpuntcluster’.
Ann Van Gysel, CEO MEDVIA legt uit: ‘Bedrijven actief in gezondheidstechnologie staan voor heel wat uitdagingen. We zullen deze leden actief opnemen en waar mogelijk, nog sterker ondersteunen in het groter geheel van onze organisatie. Ik denk hier aan toegang tot internationale markten en financiering. MEDVIA biedt hen bovendien ook een forum om samenwerkingen op te zetten met de zorg, patienten en ziekenhuizen en om te connecteren met onze andere industrieleden uit de biotech, biopharma en digitale gezondheidszorg’.
Mark Andries, administrateur-generaal VLAIO benadrukt het belang en de rol van Medvia: ‘Als één van de zeven Vlaamse speerpuntclusters is Medvia een belangrijke speler in het innovatielandschap van Vlaanderen. Ze verenigen de innovatiekracht binnen de gezondheidssector en zijn een belangrijke hefboom binnen de Vlaamse economie. Het is dan ook van cruciaal belang dat verschillende sectoren de banden aanhalen en hun expertise en knowhow delen om de kruisbestuiving binnen de verschillende disciplines te versterken. De inkanteling van MedTech is dan ook een belangrijke stap voorwaarts.’
