MEDVIA and flanders.bio vote to merge into new cluster

Flemish biotech and healthtech together as one organization

Gent & Leuven, 17/02/2025 – The network organization flanders.bio and spearhead cluster MEDVIA are merging into a new organization that will represent biotech and healthtech in Flanders. The members of both organizations – representing more than 500 companies, healthcare providers and academic institutions – voted in favor of a unified organization that can weigh in on the national and international interests of this important innovation sector for Belgium. The challenges are legion, but with the right focus, Flanders can continue to reach great heights.

Flanders has been able to boast a strong biotech and biopharma industry for years, supported from the start by flanders.bio, which now has >340 members. Only a few weeks ago, argenx opened the renowned J.P. Morgan conference in San Francisco. In the meantime, an entire healthtech community has also developed in Flanders, which has not gone unnoticed in the US, thanks to MEDVIA’s Say Yes to the US program.

Flanders is still the home base for innovation in the healthcare sector, recognized globally for its powerhouse endeavors in research and development.

CEO & ad interim board appointed

Dirk Reyn and Herman Verrelst, the respective chairs of flanders.bio and MEDVIA, will sit as independent directors on the ad interim Board of Directors that has been established for the new organization. Ann Van Gysel, CEO of MEDVIA (pictured), has been appointed as CEO of the new organization and would like to thank flanders.bio’s current CEO, Patrik De Haes, for his dedication to making the merger a smooth process.

In the following few days, the administration will be carried out to legally form the new, merged organization.  This organization will be officially presented at the annual conference Knowledge for Growth on 8 May 2025 in Antwerp. But the direction is already clear:

By bringing together all the players that have an impact on our health – red, green and white biotech as well as the healthtech developers consisting of companies, academic institutes and hospitals – we can also respond much better to the global challenges we face, and create more opportunities for our companies.”

Herman Verrelst, Chair of the Board of directors of MEDVIA, adds: “The challenges should not be underestimated. Flanders is a region where innovation is central. This remains the essence for the new organization. MEDVIA’s role as a spearhead cluster in partnership with VLAIO and supporting the intersection of  biotech and healthtech will be transferred in its entirety. This subsidy program will continue to play an important role for the entire Flemish health ecosystem.

Patrik de Haes, CEO of flanders.bio, continues: “Flanders has a strong biotech ecosystem. The merger with the healthtech cluster will undoubtedly create unique synergies. I see supporting the start-ups that emerge from this as one of the essential tasks of the new organization.”

Ann Van Gysel, CEO, concludes: “The focus from the start will be on supporting the members and developing strategic R&D roadmaps for Flanders. There is so much to be gained from this merger. I am therefore very grateful for the trust I have received from both organizations.”

MEDVIA en flanders.bio stemmen voor fusie tot nieuwe cluster

Vlaamse biotech en healthtech samen als één organisatie

Gent & Leuven, 17/02/2025 – De netwerkorganisatie flanders.bio en speerpuntcluster MEDVIA fuseren tot één nieuwe organisatie die de biotech en healthtech in Vlaanderen zal vertegenwoordigen. De leden van beide organisaties – die meer dan 500 bedrijven, zorgverleners en academische instellingen vertegenwoordigen – stemden voor een eengemaakte en sterke organisatie die kan wegen op de nationale en internationale belangen van deze voor België belangrijke innovatiesector. De uitdagingen zijn legio, maar met de juiste focus, kan Vlaanderen hoge toppen blijven scheren.

Vlaanderen kan al jaren bogen op een sterke biotech en biopharma industrie, van in het begin ondersteund door flanders.bio, die ondertussen >340 leden telt. Nog maar enkele weken geleden opende argenx de gerenommeerde J.P. Morgan conferentie in San Francisco. Ondertussen ontwikkelde er zich in Vlaanderen ook een ganse healthtech-community, die in de VS niet onopgemerkt blijft dankzij MEDVIA’s Say Yes to the US programma.

Vlaanderen is nog steeds de thuisbasis voor innovatie in de gezondheidsector en wordt wereldwijd erkend voor baanbrekiende bijdragen op het gebied van onderzoek en ontwikkeling.

CEO en ad-interimbestuur aangesteld

Dirk Reyn en Herman Verrelst, de respectievelijke voorzitters van flanders.bio en MEDVIA, zetelen als onafhankelijke bestuurders in de ad interim Raad van Bestuur die ondertussen is opgericht. Ann Van Gysel, CEO van MEDVIA, is aangesteld als CEO van de nieuwe organisatie en wil de huidige CEO van flanders.bio, Patrik De Haes, bedanken voor zijn toewijding om de fusie tot een vlot proces te maken.

In de komende dagen worden administratieve stappen gezet om de nieuwe, gefuseerde organisatie juridisch te vormen. Op de jaarlijkse conferentie Knowledge for Growth (8 mei 2025 in Antwerpen) zal de nieuwe, gefusioneerde organisatie officieel voorgesteld worden. Maar de richting is alvast duidelijk:

Dirk Reyn, voorzitter Raad van Bestuur flanders.bio: “Door de krachten te bundelen, bouwen we een efficiëntere organisatie die de volledige sector met één stem zal vertegenwoordigen. Door alle spelers die impact hebben op onze gezondheid samen te brengen – zowel rode, groene en witte biotech alsook de healthtech-ontwikkelaars bestaande uit bedrijven, academische instituten en hospitalen – kunnen we bovendien veel beter inspelen op de wereldwijde uitdagingen waar we voor staan, en meer opportuniteiten creëren voor onze bedrijven”.

Herman Verrelst, voorzitter Raad van Bestuur MEDVIA, vult aan: “De uitdagingen zijn niet te onderschatten. Vlaanderen is een regio waar innovatie centraal staat. Dit blijft de essentie voor de nieuwe organisatie. De rol van MEDVIA als speerpuntcluster, in samenwerking met VLAIO en ter ondersteuning van de kruisbestuiving tussen biotech en healthtech, wordt integraal overgedragen. Dit subsidieprogramma zal een belangrijke rol blijven spelen voor het ganse Vlaamse health-ecosysteem.

Patrik de Haes, CEO van flanders.bio, vervolgt: “Vlaanderen heeft een sterk biotech ecosysteem. Door de fusie met de healthtech cluster, zullen er ongetwijfeld unieke synergiën ontstaan. Het ondersteunen van start ups die hieruit voortkomen zie ik als een van de essentiële taken van de nieuwe organisatie”.

Ann Van Gysel, CEO, sluit af: “De focus zal vanaf de start gericht zijn op de ondersteuning van de leden en de ontwikkeling van strategische O&O roadmaps voor Vlaanderen. Er is veel te winnen bij deze fusie. Ik ben dan ook heel dankbaar voor het vertrouwen dat ik van beide organisaties heb gekregen”.
